What Roadworks are displayed on the Map?
The roadworks information displayed on this website is initially recorded in the centralised Scottish Road Works Register (SRWR). This system is used by all Local Authorities and Utilities who are carrying out roadworks on Scotland's roads. Only works that are currently being performed or are proposed to be performed are included. Any works which have been completed will be removed from the map when notification of completion is received into the SRWR from the works promoter.
Using the Map
Upon entry to the MapSearch screen the map will be positioned to show the full extent of Scotland.

On the light blue bar (see example above) towards the bottom left of the screen, a message is provided which shows how many roadworks fall within the geographic boundaries of the map view. Only when the number of works is less than or equal to 100 will the roadworks be drawn on to the map.
To zoom into a particular area of Scotland the user can simply "double-click" on their area of interest. The map will zoom in gradually with each double-click, centering on the area the user clicks on. Alternatively the user can use the standard Google zoom tool. This can be used by sliding the scale up or down or by using the + and - options. The button in the middle of the up, right, down, and left buttons enables the user to zoom to the previous extent of scale.
To navigate around the map the user can simply click and drag in the map area or use the standard Google up, right, down, left buttons.
One of the great features of Google Maps technology is the ability to overlay the maps with Satellite imagery. This feature is best utilised by using the Hybrid button, since this also overlays the map detail on top of the images.
To view further details regarding the roadworks the user can simply click on one of the roadwork signs and an information box will appear. This box provides further details regarding the roadworks, such as who is carrying out the works, a textual location of the of the works, the roadname, the earliest start and latest end dates, and the unique reference number for the works.
Location of Roadworks
Please note that not all roadworks may be positioned on the map accurately, in particular:
- Where the work is a long trench e.g. a gas main running the length of a road, the map will display the centre point of that trench.
- Roadworks recorded without coordinates in the SRWR are still displayed on this website. Such works will be displayed in the centre of the road.
Quick Search Tools

These two quick search tools enable the user to either enter a full postcode e.g. FK5 4RB or use the drop down list to zoom to a particular geographic area.
Please note that partial postcode searches are not available e.g. FK5 will not work. An error will be given at the bottom left of the screen.
Default Dates and Date Filtering Options

The map displays all the roadworks that are currently going on OR are scheduled to start within the date range specified. By default the date range is set to today's date plus 7 days, but this can be changed by the user.
The dates shown for each works are not the expected start and end dates of the roadworks. Instead, the system displays the earliest possible start and latest possible end dates for the works, according to Scottish Road Works legislation. This ensures works are visible on the map for the whole time of allowable operation.
To prevent the Map becoming cluttered with roadworks that have finished but were never closed down in the central SRWR system, a cut off period (set to 30 days) leaves out roadworks were the latest end date is greater than 30 days.
Roadworks Impact Levels

Roadworks are categorised as described below.
- High Impact
- Delays likely if the roadworks has been classified as "Major" OR if the traffic control includes convoy working, lane closure, contra-flow or road closure OR if a one month registration notice has been received.
- Medium Impact
- Delays possible if the roadworks are not significant and the roadworks type is Standard, Urgent or Emergency or the traffic control includes stop/go boards, two-way signals, multi-way signals, give and take, priority working or an agreed scheme.
- Low Impact
- Delays are unlikely, this category covers all roadworks not classedf as either High or Medium Impact.
